The Waterside Winter Night Shelter.
The Night Shelter is a Waterside Churches Together Project to
provide homeless guests from the Waterside a temporary safe
shelter, a meal and bed during the worst of the winter.
The Night Shelter is now manned and open for business on 4
evenings and at 4 locations on the Waterside.
Those who seek refuge do so through a referral system run by
various charitable agencies in our area who ensure that they meet
the strict criteria for the homeless.
Potential guests are some of the most vulnerable in our society and
are frequently afraid and intimidated by ‘normal’ society and by the
world around them so that seeking refuge, such as we are providing,
becomes a very difficult personal decision to take.
Employed staff at our Night Shelter are very experienced and
trained to understand the needs of the homeless and to encourage
them to come to our shelter, in some cases that is a long confidence
What has become very clear to those of us who have volunteered to
work at the night shelter is that the world of the truly homeless is a
very different one to that which we all enjoy.
Since December more than 60 volunteers have now received training
and are rota’d into the many tasks that are essential to ensuring
that each location runs smoothly.
Please pray for this important local project and for those who give
their time to make it happen.
